WSC prides itself on its dynamic and varied repertoire of rarely seen classics, both time honored and contemporary. Therefore, WSC is pleased to announce a rep of two DC area premieres by brilliant contemporary playwrights, whose works are bound to be produced for generations to come.
First, we open Helen Hayes winning director Joe Banno's staging of Kafka's Dick, by Tony winner Alan Bennett (The History Boys), in which the famed writer returns from the dead to discover that his dying wish for his writing to be destroyed was not executed by his friend Max Brod, who opted instead to edit and publish the work. With echoes of Tom Stoppard, this comedy bends time and space, mixes literary and ribald humor, and is not to be missed. Helen Hayes nominees Christopher Henley and Bruce Alan Rauscher play Kafka and Brod, alongside a stellar cast of WSC veterans: Charlotte Akin, Ian Armstrong, Bryan Cassidy, John Geoffrion, and Helen Hayes nominee Adrienne Nelson. On December 27, 29 & 30, Zoe Cowan will perform the role normally played by Charlotte Akin.
Opening a week after Kafka's Dick, Colin Hovde directs Wendy MacLeod's "obsidian-black comedy" (LA Weekly), The House of Yes. Set in McLean, VA, in 1983, The House of Yes presents us with the Pascal family, as dysfunctional as they are privileged, when Marty inadvisably brings his fiancee Lesly home for Thanksgiving to meet his mother, his younger brother Anthony, and his twin sister Jackie-O, who is obsessed with, among other things, the Kennedy assassination. "The resulting battle over Marty becomes something of a class struggle between the Pascals' poetic insanity and Lesly's plebeian pragmatism." (LA Weekly) Helen Hayes nominee Jason Stiles plays Marty, alongside elisha efua bartels [note: the actor spells her name in all lowercase], Jay Hardee, Wendy Wilmer, and Sara Barker as Jackie-O.
The rep is designed by HannaH J Crowell (set), Andrew F Griffin (lights), Kimberley Dawn Morell (costumes, Kafka’s Dick), Erin Nugent (costumes, The House of Yes), and Matt Otto (sound). Donna Reynolds stage manages Kafka’s Dick and Rob Barossi stage manages The House of Yes.
